“You Can Have Your Life in the Game”

Short answer: Rockstar North’s Aaron Garbut told Edge that in GTA 6 you can buy cigarettes and beer, ride the train for the day or go clubbing: “You can have your life in the game.” Edge adds that the roleplay works “within a relatively narrow band of possibility”.

What did Rockstar say?

On 29 October 2026 TweakTown highlighted quotes from Rockstar’s Edge magazine interview about living a normal life in GTA 6.

  • Aaron Garbut (co-studio head, Rockstar North): “You can really make the game what you want it to be at the time.” Whether you buy “cigarettes and beer in the shop”, go “on the train for the day” or go to a club, “You can have your life in the game.”
  • Rob Nelson (co-studio head): “It’s more about trying to let people lean into the way they want to play.”
  • Phil Hooker (head of development) often stops playing missions just to catch a bus, and has memorised every route.

Is this real? Yes, confirmed by an official source

Who said it: Aaron Garbut, Rob Nelson and Phil Hooker of Rockstar, in Edge magazine; reported by TweakTown. Sources: Edge, TweakTown. Our view: These are on-the-record quotes from Rockstar developers. The “narrow band” comment is the view of Edge writer Simon Parkin. Checked: 29 Oct 2026.

Things to do with Jason and Lucia

Edge says Jason and Lucia’s closeness is tracked on a four-point scale. It goes up when you do things together, like walks on the beach, cycling, working out at the gym or just driving around. See our relationship system guide.

There are limits

Edge writer Simon Parkin says the roleplay parts are real and have consequences, but “operate within a relatively narrow band of possibility”. So do not expect a full life sim. It is still good news for the GTA RP community, which built this kind of play in GTA 5 with mods and servers.

Why it matters

GTA 6 is not only about missions. Read more on GTA RP style life in single-player and buses and trains.
