The Onion is ready to satirize GTA 6

Short answer: The Onion’s head writer Mike Gillis told Polygon that GTA 6’s huge hype makes it “ripe” for satire, joking that “you’re kind of a dummy for thinking this is gonna change everything”, while saying he is personally excited to play it.

What Gillis said

Speaking while promoting The Onion’s first video game, The Onion Voting Simulator 3D, Gillis said anything that becomes a cultural “center of gravity” is worth deflating, and that GTA 6’s “seismic impact” makes it a perfect target.

The Onion has already run GTA 6 joke headlines, such as one about a “hyperrealistic” feature that makes players serve out prison sentences. Gillis said he still loves games and is excited for GTA 6 as a fan.

Is this real? Yes, reported by major outlets

Who said it: Mike Gillis, head writer at The Onion, interviewed by Polygon. Sources: Polygon. Our view: a real interview. The Onion’s headlines about GTA 6 are jokes, not news. Checked: 30 Oct 2026.

Satirizing a satire

Polygon points out the challenge: GTA itself is famous for mocking modern life, so The Onion has to out-joke a series built on jokes. We will find out how it goes after GTA 6 launches on 19 November.
