GTA 6 launch week survival kit: pre-load stuck, servers down, errors and fixes

Short answer: Most launch-night problems have simple fixes. If your pre-load sits at 99% or says “waiting to unlock”, that is normal until your unlock time. If the game won’t start, check PSN, Xbox and Rockstar server status first, then restart the console. We’ll add every real GTA 6 error code here from launch day, 19 November.

Step 1: Are the servers down?

Check these official status pages before changing anything on your console:

On launch night these services get heavy traffic. If one shows a problem, waiting is usually the only fix. Story mode can be played offline once the game is unlocked and installed: can you play GTA 6 offline.

Pre-load stuck at 99% or “waiting to unlock”

This is normal. Consoles keep the last part of a pre-load locked until the unlock time in your region. Your unlock time: GTA 6 unlock times.

If it still won’t start after your unlock time:

  1. Check the server status links above.
  2. Restart the console fully (not rest mode or sleep).
  3. Check for a game update: on PS5 press Options on the game tile › Check for Update; on Xbox open My games & apps › Manage › Updates.
  4. Make sure your console’s date, time and time zone are correct.
  5. Check you have free space for the day-one update: pre-load checklist.

These are standard PS5 and Xbox steps, not GTA 6-specific fixes from Rockstar.

“You can’t play this content” or a licence error

  • Sign in with the same account you bought the game on.
  • PS5: Settings › Users and Accounts › Other › Restore Licences.
  • Xbox: make the console your Home Xbox (Settings › General › Personalisation › My home Xbox).
  • Boxed copy? Make sure the download code was redeemed on that account.

Game crashes or freezes

  1. Install the latest game update and console system update.
  2. Close the game fully and restart the console.
  3. PS5: if crashes keep happening, try Safe Mode › Clear Cache and Rebuild Database (it doesn’t delete games or saves).
  4. Xbox: do a full restart by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
  5. Still crashing? Check Rockstar Support ↗ for known issues.

Protect your save

  • PS5: with PS Plus, turn on Settings › Saved Data and Game/App Settings › Sync Saved Data.
  • Xbox: saves sync to the cloud automatically when you are online.
  • Don’t turn the console off while the game is saving.

Playing on Xbox Series S

Rockstar hasn’t published Series S resolution or frame-rate details. The main issue is storage: the 512 GB model has about 364 GB usable. See every platform explained.

Ignore “fix” downloads

Launch week brings fake “crash fix”, “FPS unlocker” and “unlock early” files. They are scams or malware. Real fixes come as official updates. See GTA 6 scams.

What went wrong at the GTA 5 launch

Past launches help set expectations. These are documented events from 2013, not predictions for GTA 6.

  • GTA 5 story mode (17 September 2013) launched mostly fine. On Xbox 360 the game came on two discs and needed an install.
  • GTA Online (1 October 2013) had server problems for days: players could not connect, and some lost characters or progress.
  • Rockstar’s fix: it gave GTA$500,000 to everyone who played GTA Online in October 2013 as an apology.

Lesson for GTA 6: expect busy servers on launch night. Story mode should be playable once unlocked, but store pages, downloads and sign-ins may be slow for the first hours.
