GTA 6 pre-load checklist: storage, download time and setup

Short answer: If you pre-order the digital version, you can pre-load GTA 6 from 12 November 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, a week before it unlocks on 19 November. Rockstar has not published the file size, so free up more space than you think you need, turn on automatic downloads, and leave your console in rest or sleep mode.

The 7-step checklist

Buy the digital version (Standard or Ultimate) from the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store. Only digital pre-orders can pre-load. Official
Bought a boxed copy? There is no disc in the box, only a download code. Redeem it as soon as you have it, then download like a digital copy. See why the GTA 6 box has no disc.
Free up space now. We suggest 250 GB free to be safe (see below).
Turn on automatic downloads so the pre-load starts by itself on 12 November.
Leave the console in rest mode (PS5) or sleep (Xbox), not fully switched off.
Check your console clock and time zone, because unlocks are by local time. Our unlock time by region table has the details.
Install the day-one update when it appears. Rockstar hasn’t said how big it will be.

How much free space do you need?

Nobody outside Rockstar knows the final size yet. The PlayStation Store page has no storage figure, and the Xbox page shows a small placeholder (about 329 MB), not the real size. Reported

For comparison, GTA V’s current-gen version is about 87 GB on PS5 and 94 GB on Xbox Series X|S. GTA 6 has a bigger map, so expect more. Press estimates range from around 120 GB to 200 GB plus a day-one patch. Estimate

How long will the download take?

Type in a size and your internet speed. Not sure of your speed? Run a speed test on your console: PS5 Settings › Network › Connection Status, Xbox Settings › General › Network settings.

PS5 settings to check

Settings › Saved Data and Game/App Settings › Automatic Updates: turn on Auto-Download and Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
Settings › System › Power Saving › Features Available in Rest Mode: turn on Stay Connected to the Internet.
Use a cable instead of Wi-Fi if you can. It is usually faster and steadier.

Xbox Series X|S settings to check

Settings › General › Power options: choose Sleep (not Shutdown), so downloads keep running.
Settings › System › Updates: turn on Keep my games & apps up to date.
On Series S, check free space in My games & apps › Manage before 12 November.

Pre-load is not early access

Pre-loading only downloads the files. You can't play until your region unlocks on 19 November (18 November in some time zones). Anyone offering a "pre-load key", an "early access build" or a PC download is running a scam. Read GTA 6 scams to avoid.

When can I pre-load GTA 6?

From 12 November 2026, if you pre-ordered the digital version on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S.

Can I pre-load the boxed version?

The box holds a download code, not a disc. Redeem the code and the game downloads like a digital copy. Boxes are expected from 12 November.

How many GB is GTA 6?

Rockstar hasn't said. Plan for up to 250 GB free to be safe.

Can I play GTA 6 after pre-loading?

No. Pre-loading only downloads the files. The game unlocks at launch, around midnight local time on 19 November in most regions.

Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?

It should, since the game is coming to Series S, but you may need to delete most other games first. The 512 GB model has about 364 GB usable.
