How big is GTA 6? File size in GB

Short answer: Rockstar hasn’t published the file size yet. Neither Rockstar’s pages nor the public PlayStation Store listing show a number. Fan estimates range from 150GB to 300GB, and a screenshot claiming 244.86GB is circulating but is unverified. You’ll know for sure when preloading starts on 12 November 2026. To be safe, free up about 250–300GB.

How much space should you free up?

ConsoleUsable storage (approx.)Tip
PS5 / PS5 Slim / PS5 ProAbout 667GB to 1.8TB depending on modelClear at least 300GB to be safe; an M.2 SSD adds space
Xbox Series XAbout 800GBClear at least 300GB
Xbox Series SAbout 364GB (512GB model)You may need almost all of it, or an expansion card

The boxed copy is only a download code, so physical buyers need the space too.

Why it will be big

Rockstar calls GTA 6 its biggest game yet: a map about twice the size of GTA 5’s, over 600,000 NPC animations, and heavy use of high-detail textures and ray tracing. GTA 5’s first PC version needed 65GB in 2015, and it grew over time with updates.

Need more storage? What actually works

If your console is full, not every drive will help. The rules below come from Sony and Microsoft, not from Rockstar.

  • PS5 and PS5 Pro: PS5 games can only be played from the internal SSD or an M.2 SSD added in the expansion slot. Sony recommends a PCIe Gen4 M.2 NVMe drive with 5,500MB/s read speed or faster and a heatsink. A USB drive can only store PS5 games, not run them.
  • Xbox Series X|S: Series X|S games can only be played from the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card. A USB drive can hold them to save re-downloading, but you have to move the game back before you can play.
  • Cheapest fix: delete or move old games to a USB drive first. Moving is faster than downloading again.

Frequently asked questions

How many GB is GTA 6?

Not confirmed yet. Estimates range from 150GB to 300GB; check the store when preload opens on 12 November 2026.

When can I preload GTA 6?

From 12 November 2026.

Do I need to download GTA 6 if I buy the box?

Yes. Boxed copies contain a download code, not a disc.

Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?

Probably, but it may take almost all of the free space.

Sony recommends an M.2 NVMe PCIe Gen4 SSD with at least 5,500MB/s read speed and a heatsink. Check that the size fits the PS5 slot before you buy.
