The argument

In The Stepback newsletter, The Verge says the two biggest games of 2026 land weeks apart and offer relief after a rough year for games. GTA 6 has been 13 years in the making, and GTA 5 has sold about 230 million copies.

The column cites Circana: 29% of US gamers plan to buy GTA 6, and demand could lift slow console sales as people upgrade just to play it.

Is this real? Reported, but not confirmed by Rockstar yet

Who said it: The Verge (opinion column). Sources: The Verge. Our view: This is analysis, not news from Rockstar. The Circana number is real. Checked: 1 Nov 2026, 11:20 AM ET.

Our take

The point is less about the games and more about the business around them: layoffs, live-service bets and shorter cycles make 10+ year blockbusters rare. GTA 6 may be one of the last of its kind.
