How Take-Two came to own GTA

Grand Theft Auto began at DMA Design in Scotland in 1997. Take-Two bought publisher BMG Interactive, which held the GTA rights, in 1998 and set up Rockstar Games in New York the same year. DMA Design later joined Rockstar and became Rockstar North. Every main GTA game since has come from Rockstar under Take-Two. Full list: every GTA game in order.

Common mix-ups

  • Not Sony or Microsoft: GTA 6 comes out on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but neither company owns it. See GTA 6 platforms.
  • Not Rockstar alone: Rockstar makes the game, but the GTA brand and Rockstar itself belong to Take-Two.
