Trailer 1 explained

Trailer 1 was the first official footage of Grand Theft Auto VI, ten years after GTA V. It confirmed three big things at once: the game is set in Leonida, a version of Florida; it returns to Vice City, Rockstar’s Miami; and it has a female lead, Lucia.

It opens with Lucia in an orange prison jumpsuit talking to an officer. Her first line sets up her story: she ended up there through bad luck. Later Rockstar confirmed she was in the Leonida Penitentiary after fighting for her family.

Scene by scene: what Trailer 1 shows

  • Lucia in prison. The opening and the reason the whole story starts.
  • Welcome to Leonida. Beaches, swamps, highways and the Vice City skyline.
  • Social media chaos. Much of the trailer is shot like phone videos posted online: fights, a man and an alligator in a shop, beach parties, wild driving. It is Rockstar’s take on “Florida Man” internet culture and hints at an in-game social media app.
  • Vice City nightlife. Clubs, boats, cars and crowds.
  • Jason and Lucia together. The ending shows the pair as a Bonnie and Clyde-style couple, robbing a convenience store with masks on, then driving off with police behind them.

Jason was not named in Trailer 1. Rockstar introduced him by name in May 2025, alongside Trailer 2. Read his full profile: Jason Duval.

The music

The trailer is set to Tom Petty’s “Love Is a Long Road”, from his 1989 album Full Moon Fever. After the trailer came out, streams of the song on Spotify rose by tens of thousands of percent, according to Spotify data reported at the time.

Why Trailer 1 still matters

Most of what Trailer 1 teased turned out to be true: Leonida, Vice City, two leads, a heist story and a world full of online chaos. The one thing that changed was the date. It said 2025, and the game was later delayed twice, first to 26 May 2026 and then to 19 November 2026. Read exactly when GTA 6 unlocks in your country.
