An Extended Look explained
Trailers 1 and 2 were mostly cinematic. An Extended Look is the first long gameplay video. For 26 minutes it follows Jason and Lucia through a run of jobs across Leonida: a drug deal, a police raid, store robberies, chases and a big heist at a corporate gala.
Rockstar premiered it on Netflix, a first for a video game reveal, before posting it on YouTube six hours later.
Scene by scene: what the Extended Look shows
- Meeting Ray. Jason and Lucia visit a dealer called Ray in a run-down apartment block. The building is full of life: guards, people in the common areas, even a dog you can pet. Ray’s room is a drug lab.
- The raid. Police storm the building. Jason fights back with a pistol, then a shotgun. The pair escape through an elderly woman’s apartment and jump out of the window.
- Home life. Back at their apartment they get ready, watch TV and drive off in an old red convertible with a Depeche Mode song on the radio.
- Small jobs. Old friends offer risky work. The pair rob shops and convenience stores with bandanas over their faces and steal cars. Lucia wears a blonde wig as a disguise.
- Six stars. A chase hits a six-star wanted level. Lucia drives while Jason fires out of the back window at police cars and helicopters. They burn the car, switch to a van and disappear.
- Montage. Airboats in the swamp, clubs in Vice City, an influencer locked in a trunk and base jumping.
- The gala heist. Lucia, in a black bob, and Jason, in a suit, work a corporate gala. Jason uses a slow-motion aiming mode to mark enemies. Lucia, unarmed, fights off an attacker with her heel before both fall down an elevator shaft.
- The ending. A final montage of Leonida closes on a chihuahua in a purple tutu and fairy wings.
Gameplay details confirmed
- Switching. You play as both Jason and Lucia and can switch between them for most of the game. You can also phone your partner to join you in the open world.
- Shared car action. One drives while the other shoots.
- Six-star wanted level. Icons under the stars show what police know about you. Outlined stars mean they have no description of you.
- Police need a witness. Cops are called only if someone sees a crime or an alarm catches it.
- Robbery choices. Blowing a safe is faster but can damage what is inside.
- Disguises. Cars have trunks for weapons and a spare outfit, and wigs and clothes change how police see you.
- A real phone. The phone is an object in the character’s hand, and Snapmatic returns as a social app.
- Ryde Me. A rideshare app that works as fast travel.
- Wildlife. You can study and log animals, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2.
Previews published the same week added that Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson’s playthrough took about 80 hours, that the story is split into chapters like Red Dead Redemption 2, and that the romance between Jason and Lucia is optional. These came from press previews, not the video itself.
