What happened on Ireland AM?

On 29 October 2026 the Irish breakfast show Ireland AM talked about people booking time off work or school for the GTA 6 launch on 19 November.

Host Muireann O’Connell said she once called in sick to read the final Twilight book. Co-host Tommy Bowe said he would “absolutely” take the day off for GTA 6.

Is this real? Yes, reported by major outlets

Who said it: Ireland AM presenters, reported by The Irish Sun. Sources: The Irish Sun. Our view: This really happened on live TV. It is a light story about fans taking time off, not news from Rockstar. Checked: 29 Oct 2026.

Why it got heated

  • Later, co-host Alan Hughes, who said he never played GTA, read a viewer message. Her husband planned to call in sick for GTA 6 and she said it “wasn’t happening”.
  • Muireann replied: “A day off is yours to enjoy.”
  • She then turned to Tommy and asked “Well what else are you doing?”, realised she came on too strong, and apologised to Alan.

Why it matters

Taking a day off for GTA 6 is now a talking point on mainstream TV. See our day-off survey and poll and why workplaces could be short-staffed.
