How to steal cars in GTA 6 (it’s not one button anymore)

Short answer: In GTA 6 you can’t just press a button and drive off. Older cars open with a slim jim mini-game (or you smash the window). Modern cars need a key cloner, and high-end ones an immobilizer bypass, tools you unlock through the story. A phone app called WAINK scans a car first: value, lock type, alarm and tracker. Stolen cars are sold to fences, and damage lowers the price.

Step by step

Scan it. Point the WAINK app at the car to see its value, lock, alarm and whether it has a GPS tracker.
Pick your method. Slim jim for older cars (a right-stick timing meter), break the window, key cloner for electronic locks, or the immobilizer bypass for luxury cars.
Watch for trackers. A tracked car sends your position to the police unless you outrun the signal or dump it.
Sell it to a fence, Red Dead 2-style. Keep it clean: damaged cars are worth less.

So some cars are simply off-limits early on. That’s on purpose: Rockstar doesn’t want you to feel overpowered.

Why it matters: money

Money matters more than in GTA 5. Some story progress needs you to raise specific amounts of cash first, and selling stolen cars is one way to do it. Fences can also give you access codes to impound lots full of luxury cars.

Stealing in front of people also raises your wanted level, and how you do it affects your Criminal Profile.
