GTA 6 Map Opens Up Early

Short answer: Yes. Rockstar told Edge magazine that the GTA 6 map, the state of Leonida, opens up relatively early, so you can explore freely instead of waiting for the story to unlock areas. IGN reported it on 28 October 2026.

What did Rockstar say about the map?

Official In the new Edge magazine preview, Rockstar confirmed that Leonida opens up “relatively early”. After the opening story missions and tutorials, you should be free to drive north or anywhere else, instead of being locked into Vice City for hours.

This is different from GTA 4, where police blockades on the bridges kept parts of Liberty City closed until the story moved on. It is closer to GTA 5, which let you go almost anywhere once the tutorials ended.

Rockstar is still discovering new places

Rockstar North co-studio head Aaron Garbut said he is still finding new locations in Leonida himself. He also said the game has “an order of magnitude more interiors” than past Rockstar games, all made by hand.
